The Limes, a Chapter 1 project, wins StreetGames National Project of the Year Award...

04 APR 2014

for its groundbreaking homeless football project in Manchester – E.Quality FC. At a ceremony at Warwick University last night, the initiative run from Chapter 1’s Manchester Hostel, The Limes, beat around 100 other projects to take the trophy.

Chapter 1 received the award for the Homeless football league ‘E.Quality FC’ set up in Manchester, spearheaded by Dean Ashton and the staff team at Chapter 1’s Manchester hostel, The Limes. The project not only offered the chance to play football, but enabled participants from homeless projects across the city to gain accredited qualifications for both sports leadership, and personal development. The Limes worked in partnership with a range of other homeless organisations, sports initiatives, and training agencies. One of the highlights of the 2013 programme was a visit to Turkey with ten former homeless people to coach football skills with street children.

Dean Ashton, with the support of StreetGames, is now rolling out a programme of Doorstep Sports Clubs in Chapter 1 projects across England.

Geoff Hawkins, Chief Executive of Chapter 1, said: ‘Chapter 1 are thrilled to have won this award. Thank you to StreetGames, and congratulations to Dean Ashton and everyone in Manchester who has been involved with the homeless football project. This award endorses the benefits of sport for homeless people. It’s not just about playing a game. It’s about self-confidence, improving social skills, and encouraging a healthy lifestyle. It sums up what Chapter 1 believes in – changing lives one by one.‘

Dean Ashton, National Sports Development Manager at  Chapter 1: ‘I’m stunned. I can’t believe we won it when there were so many other great projects nominated. This is not just for Chapter 1, and not just for Manchester, but for all the homeless people who have discovered the benefits of sport and changed their lives around.’
